March 14, 2023 High pressure misting can be a great way to keep your livestock cool and productive through the hottest times of the year. Cooling is achieved by injecting a fine mist of cool water into an incoming air jet. As that air jet absorbs the water the air temperature is then cooled. How ever it is not as simple as it might appear. The notion of putting a line in your barn with a nozzle every 4 feet is about as correct as driving with a blindfold on. At Mackay Equipment we engineer each one of our misting systems. As every barn is different so to is the equipment and solutions you need to make your animals perform their best. When Mackay designs a cooling system, we must take into consideration the amount of air we are moving into and through the building. This will in turn tell us how much water we need to inject to get a substantial temperature drop while not increasing the humidity to an unacceptable level. Much like an internal combustion engine the air/fuel ratio, or in our case the water/air ratio is very important. Otherwise you end up with a system that does not cool much (not enough water) or a system that makes everything wet (too much water). As you can see a one size fits all solution is not acceptable. At Mackay Equipment we make sure you have the right number of nozzles for your barn size and number of animals. We also make sure that the nozzles are placed right in front of an incoming air jet. Ensuring that all the water is evaporated efficiently as possible. We are able to do this by punching our nozzles into the line after it is hung thus making sure all the nozzles are in the correct position. Misting systems can also be a multifunctional tool. In some livestock facilities a minimum humidity level is very important. In these cases, we can use the misting system as a humidification system as well. By cycling the misting system in the barn, we can increase the humidity to the desired level. There are other applications where we can use the misting system as a cleaning aid or disinfecting system as well. While the barn is empty you can run your misting system to either soak or disinfect your barn.
